# How to predict your IELTS score before you take the exam

Walking into the IELTS exam without a realistic score prediction is expensive. Here's how CEFR benchmarking and targeted practice give you a reliable indicator before test day.

[Eray Gündoğmuş](https://carna.ai/en/blog/author/eray-gundogmus/)

The IELTS exam costs between $200 and $250 to sit. Taking it underprepared — because you didn't have a reliable way to estimate your score — is an expensive mistake. Here's how to predict your band score with reasonable accuracy before committing to a test date.

## The CEFR-to-IELTS mapping

IELTS uses a 0–9 band scale. CEFR uses A1–C2. The two scales are not identical, but they map closely:

- B1 → IELTS 4.0–5.0
- B2 → IELTS 5.5–6.5
- C1 → IELTS 7.0–8.0
- C2 → IELTS 8.5–9.0

If you have a reliable CEFR level assessment, you have a rough IELTS band estimate. The precision depends on which skills drive your CEFR level — if your reading is C1 but your speaking is B1, your overall CEFR masks a speaking gap that will pull your IELTS band down.

## Why per-skill assessment matters

IELTS scores each of the four skills separately: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Your overall band is the average of the four. Many learners have significant skill imbalances — strong reading and weak speaking is the most common. A strong overall CEFR assessment can hide a speaking gap that produces a disappointing IELTS band on test day.

The most accurate IELTS prediction comes from per-skill assessment, not an overall level. Assess each skill separately and map each to the IELTS band scale independently.

## How Carna's CEFR assessment maps to IELTS

Carna's placement benchmarks each skill against the CEFR scale and provides per-skill CEFR levels. Combined with the CEFR-to-IELTS mapping, this gives a per-skill IELTS band estimate. The overall band is the average of the four — the same way IELTS calculates it.

This method is not perfectly precise — test-taking skill (pacing, format familiarity) and exam-day performance add variance — but it's significantly more reliable than self-assessment, and it identifies which specific skill to focus preparation time on.

## The impact of exam format familiarity

IELTS has specific task types that don't appear in general English learning: Academic Reading passages with 13 questions in 20 minutes, Task 1 bar-chart or process descriptions, Speaking Part 2 long turns. Learners who are unfamiliar with these formats consistently underperform their language proficiency level.

Practising in [IELTS task format](https://carna.ai/en/use-cases/ielts-prep/) — not just building general English — closes the gap between your language level and your IELTS score. A B2 learner familiar with IELTS format will score higher than a B2 learner who hasn't practised the format.

## A practical pre-test checklist

Before booking your IELTS exam, work through this sequence:

1. Get a per-skill CEFR assessment (reading, writing, speaking, listening separately)
2. Map each skill to an IELTS band using the CEFR scale
3. Identify which skill is furthest from your target band
4. Spend 60–70% of your preparation time on that skill
5. Complete at least three full practice tests in timed IELTS format
6. Check your predicted band against your practice test results — they should be within 0.5–1 band

When your practice test results and CEFR-derived prediction agree, you have a reliable estimate. Book the exam when your practice results consistently reach your target band — not before.

## FAQ

### How can I predict my IELTS score before the exam?

To predict your IELTS score before the exam, get a CEFR level for each of the four skills, map each one to an IELTS band and average the four, the same way IELTS calculates the overall band. Then complete at least three full practice tests in timed IELTS format. If the prediction and your practice results agree within 0.5 to 1 band, the estimate is reliable.

### What IELTS band is equivalent to B1, B2, C1 and C2?

CEFR B1 is roughly IELTS 4.0 to 5.0, B2 is 5.5 to 6.5, C1 is 7.0 to 8.0 and C2 is 8.5 to 9.0. IELTS uses a 0 to 9 band scale and CEFR runs from A1 to C2, so the two scales are not identical, but they map closely. A reliable CEFR level assessment gives you a rough IELTS band estimate.

### How accurate is an IELTS score prediction?

An IELTS prediction built from per-skill CEFR levels is reasonably accurate, not exact. Test-taking skill, such as pacing and format familiarity, and exam-day performance add variance. It is still significantly more reliable than self-assessment, and it shows which skill needs the most preparation time. Because it is an estimate, book the exam only when your timed practice test results consistently reach your target band.

### Why is my IELTS score lower than my English level?

A weak skill or an unfamiliar exam format can pull an IELTS score below your English level. The overall band is the average of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, so one weaker skill, most often speaking, drags it down. IELTS also has task types that general English learning does not include. Practising in IELTS task format closes the gap between your level and your score.
