— WHAT YOU CAN DO

## What does the A1 English level mean?

A1 is the beginner level of English, the first of six levels on the CEFR scale. At A1 you can use basic everyday phrases. You can introduce yourself and answer simple questions when people speak slowly. Reaching A1 usually takes about 90 to 100 guided learning hours from zero.

1. Listening

Pick out familiar words and very basic phrases about you, your family and what is around you. This works when people speak slowly and clearly.

2. Reading

Read familiar names and words, and very simple sentences. For example, on signs, posters or in catalogues.

3. Speaking

Introduce yourself. Ask and answer simple questions about where you live, people you know and things you have. Talk in a simple way if the other person speaks slowly and is ready to help.

4. Writing

Write a short, simple postcard. Fill in forms with your details, such as your name, nationality and address.

These can-do lines follow the Council of Europe's self-assessment grid.
