B1 is the intermediate level of English, the third of six levels on the CEFR scale. At B1 you can follow the main points on familiar topics, cope when you travel and give reasons for your views. Reaching B1 usually takes about 350 to 400 guided learning hours in total. B1 compares with IELTS band 4.0 to 5.0. 1. Listening Understand the main points of clear, standard speech about work, school and free time. Follow TV programmes and films on topics you know when people speak slowly and clearly. 2. Reading Understand texts in everyday or work language. Follow what people write in personal letters about events, feelings and wishes. 3. Speaking Deal with most things that come up when you travel where English is spoken. Join a talk on a familiar topic without preparing. Describe your experiences, dreams and goals, and briefly say why. 4. Writing Write simple, connected text on topics you know or care about. How long it takes, what it lets you do, and how B1 compares. ### How long does it take to reach B1? B1 usually takes about 350 to 400 guided hours in total. It is a bigger jump than the levels before it, which is why many learners feel their progress slow down here. ### What can I do at B1 level? At B1 you can travel on your own where English is spoken. You can write connected text on familiar topics, describe your experiences and give reasons for your opinions. ### Why do so many learners get stuck at B1? B1 needs many more words and the skill to keep a conversation going, and your progress gets harder to see.
