What is Speak good for?

How is Carna different from Speak?

Both answer yes to conversation and to pronunciation: in the Carna app, which is in early access, you talk a situation through live with Mia, its AI tutor, and your pronunciation is scored from your own voice. Where Speak's column has no A1 to C2 curriculum and no writing evaluation, Carna puts the speaking on a path from A1 to C2 and scores writing, reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary beside it. After the trial, Speak is a subscription; the Carna app will open with a free plan.

Running in schools today

The path the speaking sits on.

A speaking app gives you the loop; Carna gives you the curriculum around it. In Carna for Schools, which runs today, every module a student is assigned wears its CEFR level and the list runs soonest due first, so a learner always knows which rung of the A1 to C2 ladder they are working on.

A student's Learn screen in Carna for Schools: the assigned modules, each with its CEFR level and the skills it works on, sorted by due date. Carna School London is a sample school; the names, courses, levels and scores are demo data.

FAQ

Common questions.

Straight answers about Speak and Carna, including how this comparison was built and what the individual tutor cannot do yet.

Does Carna do everything Speak does?

Not all of it, but it has the conversation: in the Carna app, which is in early access, you talk a situation through live with Mia, its AI tutor, and choose how much help she gives. Open conversation with an AI is Speak's whole product; what Carna adds is the rest of the curriculum, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, scored as eight skills on one path from A1 to C2.

Is Speak good for beginners?

Speak is built around speaking practice, and its verdict here is for a learner who is already conversational; check its site for the level it expects. Carna's path starts at A1, the first CEFR level, so a beginner has a structured place to start.

Is Speak free?

No: Speak starts with a 7-day trial, and after it the plan is $17.99 a month on the US App Store, as we read them on speak.com on 27 September 2026. The Carna app will open with a free plan rather than a trial, and it is in early access now.

How did you check the Speak column?

The Speak column reflects the plans and features Speak publishes, as we checked them in May 2026. Its free plan and prices were checked again on 27 September 2026, on speak.com. Carna's column is held to the same standard as the Speak column, so where it falls short, it says so. "Partly" means a feature exists with a limit, and the limit is named under the row. Products change quickly, so check speak.com for the latest.
