Level tests, explained
English level test: how to find your level.
A level test places your English on the CEFR scale, from A1 to C2. This page hosts no test: take a sample test from Carna Test on carnatest.com, then read here what your result means.

THE SHORT ANSWER
How can I check my English level?
Take a level test, then read the result on the CEFR scale, which runs from A1 to C2. Carna hosts no test on this site. Carna Test, Carna's sister product for English assessment, has sample tests on carnatest.com. A short test gives an estimate, so treat the level as a starting point, and look at each skill on its own: reading and speaking are rarely at the same level.
WHAT IT MEASURES
What does an English level test measure?
A level test samples the skills that make up your English. A short test checks a few of them. A longer one checks more, and takes longer to mark.
-
Grammar
Can you choose the right form? Grammar questions are quick to mark, so short tests lean on them.
-
Vocabulary
How many words you know, and whether you can use them in a sentence.
-
Reading
A text and questions about it: the main point, a detail, what the writer only implies.
-
Listening
A recording and questions about what was said. Not every short test has one.
-
Speaking
You talk, and a person or an AI scores what you said. Few short tests include it.
-
Writing
A text you write yourself. It takes longer to mark, so short tests often leave it out.
WHERE TO TAKE ONE
Where can you take an English level test?
On carnatest.com. Carna Test is Carna's sister product for English assessment, on its own site, and it has sample tests you can take there. There is no test on carna.ai: this page explains how level tests work and what your result means. For the day you need to prove your level, Carna Test also has an AI-first English test with a CEFR certificate at the end.

How does an English level test work?
A level test asks a set of questions, compares your answers with what learners at each level can do, and reports a level. Four things decide how much that level tells you.
- 1
The questions adapt
Many tests are adaptive. Answer well and the next question is harder; miss one and it gets easier. That is how a short test can cover six levels.
- 2
Each skill is scored on its own
A placement test scores each skill separately, because reading and speaking are rarely at the same level.
- 3
The result sits on the CEFR scale
CEFR is the Council of Europe's scale for language ability, with six levels from A1 to C2. Schools, exam boards and employers use it, so a level means the same thing everywhere.
- 4
The result is estimated or certified
A sample or practice test gives an estimated level, for your own use. A certified test ends with a certificate you can show a school or an employer.
YOUR RESULT
What does your level test result mean?
Your result is one of six CEFR levels. A is a basic user, B an independent user and C a proficient user. Each line says what the level lets you do. Open a level for its full guide: the skills, the hours it usually takes and the step after it.
-
A1 Beginner
You use basic everyday phrases. You can introduce yourself and answer simple questions when people speak slowly.
-
A2 Elementary
You handle simple, routine tasks. You can describe your background and daily life in simple words.
-
B1 Intermediate
You follow the main points on familiar topics. You cope when you travel, and you can give reasons for your views.
-
B2 Upper-Intermediate
You understand the main ideas of complex texts. You talk with native speakers without strain, and you can explain your view.
-
C1 Advanced
You understand long, hard texts and what they only imply. You use English with ease for study and work.
-
C2 Proficient
You understand almost everything you hear or read, and you express fine shades of meaning.

WHAT IT CANNOT TELL YOU
What does a short level test miss?
A short test is a good first reading and a poor final word. Even exam boards call their own short online tests a guide, not proof of your level. Three limits are worth knowing before you act on a result.
-
It is an estimate, not a certificate
A short test places you roughly. A university, an employer or a visa office usually asks for a certified test, and says which ones it accepts.
-
It may never hear you speak
Short tests lean on grammar and vocabulary, because those are quick to mark. Your speaking and writing can sit above or below the level they show.
-
One level hides the gap between skills
Strong reading and weak listening are two levels, not one. A single result averages them, and the weaker skill is the one that needs the work.
IN THE CARNA APP
How does the Carna app find your level?
Skill by skill. The Carna app starts with a placement that finds your level in each skill and places you on the CEFR scale, from A1 to C2. Then it builds the plan around your goal and your time, and measures you again after every lesson. The app is in early access, so nobody can take that placement yet. Join the list and we write once, when your place opens.

FOR SCHOOLS AND TEAMS
Placing a class or a team?
To place a whole class or check a candidate's level, the tool is Carna Test: standalone English assessment for placement, hiring and academic testing, on carnatest.com. To teach after the test, Carna for Schools and Carna for Business are live today, on the same CEFR scale.
QUESTIONS
Questions about English level tests.
Short answers on cost, length, accuracy and certificates.
Is there a free English level test?
Yes. Carna Test, Carna's sister product, lists free sample tests on carnatest.com. There is no test on carna.ai, which only explains them. Before you begin any free test, check two things: whether it asks for your email first, and whether the result is an estimate or a certificate.
How long does an English level test take?
It depends on what it measures. A quick check of grammar and vocabulary has few questions and takes a few minutes. A test of every skill, with speaking and writing, takes much longer, because someone or something has to listen to you and read what you wrote. Look for the length on the test's own page before you begin. As a rule, a longer test gives a steadier result.
Is an online English level test accurate?
Accurate enough to choose a course or a book, not to prove your level. A short test asks few questions, so one lucky guess can move the result. Even exam boards call their own short online tests a guide. Trust a result more when the test is longer, covers more of your skills and adapts to your answers.
Does a level test result count as a certificate?
Not from a sample or practice test. Those give an estimated level for your own use. A certificate comes from a certified test. Carna Test, on carnatest.com, is an AI-first English test you take from home, with a CEFR certificate at the end. Ask the school or the employer which certificates it accepts before you pay for one.
What English level do I need for work or study?
It depends on who is asking, so read their requirement first. As a guide, B2 is the level most universities and employers ask for, and many degrees taught in English and many demanding jobs ask for C1. B1 is where English becomes useful for independent travel and work. Carna has a guide to each level, from A1 to C2.
What is the difference between a placement test and a proficiency test?
A placement test finds your starting level, so a school or an app can put you in the right course. A proficiency test proves a level to someone else, such as a university or an employer, and ends with a certificate. A placement test is usually shorter, and its result is for you and your teacher.
Does the Carna app have a level test?

The app is in early access, so there is no individual sign-up and nobody can take that placement yet. Join the early-access list and we write once, when your place opens.
