IN SHORT

How do you practise English speaking with AI?

By having a conversation, out loud, with an AI tutor. In the Carna app that tutor is Mia. You pick an everyday situation, from ordering in a café to a job interview, and choose how much help you want: Conversation, Guided or Check. When you get stuck, Guided mode steps in with a line to try. The app is in early access and will open with a free plan.

WHAT IT INCLUDES

What does speaking practice in Carna include?

Speaking practice in Carna is a conversation, out loud, with Mia, the app's AI tutor. These are its parts. The app is in early access, so the call at the top of this page is a preview.

  • Mia, an AI tutor

You speak with Mia, the app's AI tutor. She is software, not a person, and the app says so.

  • Everyday situations

Pick a situation, from ordering in a café to a job interview, and talk it through with Mia.

  • A level and a length

Every situation has its level and its length, so you know what you are picking.

  • Three amounts of help

Conversation, Guided or Check: you choose how much help you want.

  • A line to try

When you get stuck, Guided mode steps in with a line to try.

  • No recording kept

Your microphone is on only during the call, and no recording is kept.

STEP BY STEP

How does a speaking session go?

One situation, from the moment you pick it to the end of the call, in the order the Carna app takes you through it. The app is in early access.

  1. 1

    Pick a situation

Start with what you want to rehearse, from a café order to a job interview, at a level and a length that fit you.

  2. 2

Choose how much help you want

Conversation, Guided or Check, whichever suits you on the day. The café call at the top of this page is in Guided mode.

  3. 3

    Talk it through, out loud

Answer Mia, the app's AI tutor, out loud, and keep the conversation going. In Guided mode, a line to try appears when the words do not come.

  4. 4

    End the call

When you end the call, your microphone goes off and no recording is kept. Pick another situation when you are ready.

BEFORE THE APP OPENS

English speaking practice you can do on your own today.

The Carna app is in early access, so here is what works without it. None of these needs a partner or a speaking app: your voice, your phone and a few minutes are enough.

  • Shadowing

Play a short clip of clear English one line at a time. Say each line along with the speaker, copying the rhythm and the stress as well as the words.

  • Talking to yourself

Describe what you are doing while you do it: making tea, walking to work, planning the day. When a word is missing, note it and look it up afterwards.

  • Recording and listening back

Record yourself answering one simple question on your phone. Listen once for what you said and once for how it sounded, then say it again.

  • A short daily slot

Give speaking a small, fixed place in your day, tied to something you already do. A few minutes you keep every day does more than a long session you skip.

AI OR A PERSON

An AI speaking partner or a human one?

A human partner's strength is the real thing: unplanned talk between two people. An AI partner's strength is rehearsal: a situation you pick, a set length and help when you get stuck. The two work well together.

An AI speaking partner and a human speaking partner, side by side
What you are comparing An AI partner A human partner
Fitting it in No one to book. Each situation has a set length, so it fits a short gap in your day. You agree a time together. The appointment is also a reason to show up.
When you get stuck Help is part of the practice. In Carna, Guided mode steps in with a line to try. A good partner waits, rephrases and reads your face. That is hard to match.
Making mistakes Nobody is listening but the tutor, so you can get it wrong and say it again. Mistakes feel bigger in front of a person. That pressure is also what a real conversation is like.
What it is best for Rehearsal: the same situation again, until the words come more easily. The real thing: unplanned talk, humour and a person who answers as themselves.

How can I practise English speaking by myself?

Say English out loud every day, even with nobody listening. Shadow a short clip line by line, describe what you are doing as you do it, and record yourself answering one question, then listen back. When the Carna app opens you will also be able to talk a situation through with Mia, its AI tutor. The app is in early access.

How do I practise English conversation with AI?

Is AI speaking practice as good as a human speaking partner?

They are good at different things. A human partner's strength is real, unplanned conversation between two people. An AI partner's strength is rehearsal: you pick the situation, get help when you are stuck, and nobody is listening but the tutor. A good teacher or partner still matters, and the two work well together. The Carna app, with its AI tutor Mia, is in early access.

Is Carna's speaking practice free?

The Carna app will open with a free plan, but it is not open yet. It is in early access, and joining the list is free. We will tell you what the paid plans cost before you pay for anything. For free speaking practice today, our comparison of the best AI English tutors in 2026 lists what each app gives you free.

What level of English do I need to start speaking practice?

None. Carna's material starts at A1, the first CEFR level, and runs to C2. In the app every speaking situation has its own level, so a beginner and an advanced learner each pick one that fits. The sample in the app preview, ordering in a café, is at A2. The app is in early access.

How many minutes a day should I practise speaking English?

There is no fixed number. A short session you keep every day does more than a long one you skip, so pick a length you can manage on a busy day. In the Carna app each speaking situation has a set length; the sample in the app preview, ordering in a café, runs up to 5 minutes. The app is in early access.

Does Carna record my voice?

No. Your microphone is on only during a speaking practice, and no recording is kept. If you want to hear yourself, record a short answer on your own phone and listen back. The Carna app is in early access.

Can I practise for a job interview in English with AI?

Yes, when the app opens. A job interview is one of the situations you can pick in the Carna app, next to everyday ones such as ordering in a café, and you talk it through out loud with Mia, its AI tutor. The app is in early access. Until then, say your answers to the common questions out loud, record them and listen back.
