FAQ
Common questions.
Straight answers about Duolingo for Schools and Carna for Schools, including how this comparison was built.
Is Duolingo for Schools closing, and when?
Yes, on 31 July 2027. Duolingo's help centre says Duolingo for Schools will sunset on that date, that educators and students can keep using it as usual until then, and that no new accounts or classrooms can be created. The Duolingo app stays available to teachers and students afterwards, without the teacher dashboard, classroom assignments or central progress reports. Carna for Schools runs today and is open to new schools; the way in is a demo.
Can I still create a classroom in Duolingo for Schools?
No. Duolingo's help centre says new accounts and classrooms can no longer be created, and that deleting your last classroom closes your access: a deleted classroom cannot be restored, and a new one cannot be created. With an existing classroom you can still let students join through their own Duolingo accounts, move or remove them, view their progress and set XP assignments, and it stays free until 31 July 2027. A school starting now cannot join it; Carna for Schools is open to new schools today.
How do assignments and reports work in Duolingo for Schools?
Duolingo's help centre describes XP assignments: each student gets a number of points to earn by a set date, through almost any activity in Duolingo, and takes on one XP assignment at a time. Reports show assignment completion, the points earned, the unit a student is on, and time on task and accuracy for each assignment. Marking of speaking or writing for the teacher is not stated by Duolingo. In Carna for Schools you assign coursework with a due date, essays and speaking are graded with an AI suggestion a teacher decides, and each student has a report.
Is Carna for Schools free, like Duolingo for Schools?
No. Duolingo for Schools is free for the classrooms that already have it, until it closes on 31 July 2027. Carna for Schools is priced per seat and quoted after a demo, and a single class or department can start on a pilot quote. Carna's free trial is for schools and teams.
