What does the C1 English level mean?

C1 is the advanced level of English, the fifth of six levels on the CEFR scale. At C1 you can understand long, hard texts and what they only imply. You use English with ease for study and work. Reaching C1 usually takes about 700 to 800 guided learning hours in total. C1 compares with IELTS band 7.0 to 8.0.

  1. Listening

    Understand long speech even when it is not clearly organised and the links between ideas are only implied. Follow TV programmes and films without much effort.

  2. Reading

    Understand long, complex texts, both fact and fiction, and notice differences in style. Read expert articles and long technical guides, even outside your field.

  3. Speaking

    Speak fluently and naturally without often searching for words. Use English flexibly and well for social life and work. Describe complex subjects clearly and in detail, and end with a suitable conclusion.

  4. Writing

    Write clear, well-organised text and develop your views at some length. Write about complex subjects in a letter, essay or report, in a style that suits the reader.

How long it takes, what it lets you do, and how C1 compares.

How long does it take to reach C1?

C1 usually takes about 700 to 800 guided hours in total. Many degrees taught in English, and many demanding jobs, ask for C1.

What can I do at C1 level?

At C1 you express ideas fluently and naturally. You use English flexibly for study and work, and you understand long, hard texts, even what they only imply.

What IELTS score compares with C1?

Commonly published IELTS–CEFR comparisons put C1 at about band 7 to 8. That band shows an advanced, effective command of English for study, social life and work. It is a comparison, not a conversion.
