— WHAT YOU CAN DO

What C1 lets you do.

The CEFR describes C1 in “can-do” terms: what you are able to do with the language in each mode, not what you know about it. These lines follow the Council of Europe's self-assessment grid.

  1. Listening

Understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and relationships are only implied, and follow TV programmes and films without much effort.

  2. Reading

Understand long, complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style, and specialised articles and longer technical instructions even outside your field.

  3. Speaking

Express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions, use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes, and present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects with a suitable conclusion.

  4. Writing

Express yourself in clear, well-structured text, expanding on points of view at some length, and write on complex subjects in a letter, essay or report in a style suited to the reader.

A placement test scores each skill separately, because reading and speaking are rarely at the same level. Carna Test is the assessment platform from Carna, on its own site.
