What does the C2 English level mean?

C2 is the proficient level of English, the sixth and highest level on the CEFR scale. At C2 you can understand almost everything you hear or read, and express fine shades of meaning. Reaching C2 usually takes 1,000 or more guided learning hours in total. C2 compares with IELTS band 8.5 to 9.0.

  1. Listening

    Understand any kind of spoken English, live or on TV and radio, even at fast native speed. You may need some time to get used to the accent.

  2. Reading

    Read almost any kind of text with ease. That includes abstract or complex texts such as manuals, expert articles and literature.

  3. Speaking

    Take part in any conversation or discussion with ease, with a good command of idioms and everyday speech. Give a clear, smooth description or argument in a style that fits the context. Build it so the listener notices and remembers the key points.

  4. Writing

    Write clear, smooth text in a style that fits. This includes complex letters, reports and articles that make a case in a clear, logical order. You can also sum up and review professional or literary works.

Questions about C2.

How long it takes, what it lets you do, and how C2 compares.

How long does it take to reach C2?

C2 usually takes 1,000 or more guided hours in total, and years of steady contact with English. It means near-native command, not a course you simply finish.

What can I do at C2 level?

At C2 you understand almost everything you hear or read. You can sum up and rebuild complex arguments, and you express yourself precisely, with a feel for fine shades of meaning.

Is C2 the same as native?

C2 is the highest CEFR level and shows near-native command. But it is not a test of being a native speaker. Highly educated non-native speakers use English at C2, and not all native speakers do.
